Insurance companies are using rigid interpretations of the small print in household policies to throw out more claims, according to a survey of Insurance brokers.
Members of the Irish Brokers Association (IBA) blamed the spike in rejected claims on the economic climate and a rise in insurance fraud, resulting in claims being vetted more carefully.
“Consumers who deal directly with Insurance companies are less likely to be paid or are likely to receive a lower settlement in the event of a loss” said Brian McNeilis of the IBA.
McNeilis said 61% of brokers surveyed reported that they had successfully renegotiated a rejected claim, while 78% said they had secured a better settlement for clients than Insurers’ first offers. Insurers defend their stricter claims handling, saying fewer claims means lower premiums. Taking this into consideration, we at Campion Insurance would advise you to take more time considering your Household Insurance when it comes around for renewal.
