Presidential hopeful to open Birr Vintage Parade

PRESIDENTIAL hopeful Michael D Higgins will open the Birr Vintage Week and Arts Festival Parade this Sunday afternoon at 3pm.

PRESIDENTIAL hopeful Michael D Higgins will open the Birr Vintage Week and Arts Festival Parade this Sunday afternoon at 3pm.

The parade also marks the official opening of the 43rd Annual Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival which is the highlight in Birr and Offaly’s calendar of cultural events.

The all-inclusive programme of entertainment offers visitors and locals the opportunity to revel in Birr’s contemporary culture with a dynamic range of vintage and modern events throughout the Festival Week.

Michael D Higgins says he is greatly looking forward to visiting the town and experiencing first hand Birr’s arts, culture, entertainment and hospitality.

A veteran politician, Michael D, as he is more popularly known, is the current President of the Labour Party and that party’s candidate for the upcoming Presidential election.

A former TD and Senator, he also served as Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht from 1993 – 1997.

During his tenure his department funded the setting up of a network of professional arts venues and theatres right across Ireland including Birr Theatre & Arts Centre.
