CLARA’S Caitlin Dmello-Kane and Rhode’s Christian Taylor had plenty of reason to celebrate at the weekend following their magnificent successes at the World Irish Dance Association (WIDA) European & World Irish Dance Championships 2012 at the amazing Maritim Arena in Dusseldorf, Germany.
Caitlin was crowned U-21 WIDA European & World Irish Dance Champion, while Christian Taylor moved up the ranks at the WIDA European & World Irish Dance Championships to claim 2nd place in Europe.
Twenty-three dancers from The Emerald Lakes Academy (formerly Kevin Lyster School), Rochfortbridge headed off to Germany to take part in the most prestigious Irish Dance event in the world.
The Emerald Lakes Academy took the Championships by storm, out performing other schools from across the globe.
The group of dancers Caitlin Dmello-Kane, Gemma Gorman, Niamh Glynn, Sarah Jane Curran, Theresa Jackson, Marilyn Loran, Chloe Renshaw-Colgan, Ava Loran, Angela Bradley, Sarah Loran, Christian Taylor, Evelyn Kelly-Joyce, Niamh Sheridan, Ciara Lyster, James Taylor, Melissa Cully, Megan McKenna, Jane Kinsella, Barra Kinsella, Brianna Daly, Hannah Farrell, Celine Colgan-Murphy & Deirdre Seery.
The Emerald Lakes Academy also had the honour of taking part in the opening ceremony in Dusseldorf carrying the flags of Finland, Spain, China & Kazakhstan.
The four day event consisted of European & World Solo & Team Dancing with the hotly contested Irish Dance Drama held at a special Gala Night in the Arena in which The Lakers took 4th place after strong opposition from Ukraine, UK, Belarus & Germany.
Senior Ceili team took on 12 countries and were crowned 1st Place 2012 World Senior Ceili Champions after a breathtaking performance from Niamh Sheridan, Evelyn Kelly-Joyce, Ciara Lyster, Sarah Jane Curran, Caitlin Dmello-Kane, Celine Colgan-Murphy, Theresa Jackson & Marilyn Loran.
Junior Ceili Team took on 17 countries and took 3rd place in the World with an excellent performance from Angela Bradley, Megan McKenna, Hannah Farrell, Deirdre Seery, Jane Kinsella, Niamh Glynn, Gemma Gorman & Chloe Renshaw-Colgan.
Cailtin Dmello-Kane (1st place in Europe and 2nd place in the World Championships), Niamh Glynn (5th in Europe and 5th in World), Sarah Jane Curran (5th in World), Theresa Jackson (4th in World), Ava Loran (2nd in Europe), Gemma Gorman (2nd in Europe), Celine Colgan-Murphy & Evelyn Kelly-Joyce (European Premiership Champions).
This has been the most successful event for the School, founded by Kevin Lyster two years ago. Kevin & his team of Sarah Jane Curran & Mark McMahon have propelled the local school onto the World Map in Irish dance.
Reflecting on the week in Germany, Kevin Lyster said, “We are extremely proud of all our dancers and their great achievements, It has been an amazing journey and the memories that we have come home with from Germany will stay with us forever. The people of WIDA & Germany have been fantastic to us and we had a fantastic time with all our dancers, parents and other schools from across the world! The hard work has paid off and we are celebrating!”
