ALL-IRELAND Poetry Day 2011 takes place on Thursday, October 6 and will see poetry events taking place all over the country. Offaly Library Service is participating in this celebration of poetry with a programme of events and activities including poetry readings and displays of poetry books from library stock.
Carrick-on-Suir poet Michael Coady will be performing a reading of some of his work in Clara Library at 7.00pm. Clara Library may be contacted at (057) 9331389 for further information.
Tullamore Library will also be hosting an evening of poetry beginning at 7.00pm. The floor will be open to anyone who would like to read out some poetry that they have written. Local poets including Ken Hume, Anthony Sullivan and Thomas Carty will also read a selection of their works. For further details contact Tullamore Library at (057) 9346832. Light refreshments will be available.
For younger fans of poetry and rhyme Clara Library will hold its own Poem and Rhyme Storytime for children earlier in the day at 3.30pm. This will feature funny poems and classic nonsense verse in addition to rhyming storybook readings.
Admission to all three events is free!
Don’t forget that Offalt Libraries are also a great year-round source of poetry through its varied stock of poetry books. This literary resource will be in evidence in several libraries on All-Ireland Poetry Day when Banagher, Birr, Clara and Tullamore Libraries will all hold displays of poetry books from library stock. Birr Library’s display will include works by local poet Eileen Casey. If you fancy testing your knowledge of poetry why not have a go at a Poetry Quiz Sheet, a quick set of teasers in honour of the day (the answers will be available on the library website www.offaly.ie/libraries)
