The documentary film A Grand Experience, commissioned in 2012 by Offaly County Council and made by Mixed Bag Media has risen to new heights, as Aer Lingus announced it would show the film on transatlantic flights this April and May.
The film will feature as part of their programme of ‘Gathering’ inspired in-flight entertainment. The film which follows three Offaly artists (Eugene O’Brien, Wayne Brennan and Veronica Nicholson) on a Grand Canal barge journey from Shannon Harbour to Edenderry, cinematically conveys the beauty and charisma of the winding canal through the county while unveiling how each artist finds creative inspiration along the way.
Speaking of the announcement, Arts Officer Sinead O’Reilly said, “This is great news for Offaly, and testament to the quality of the film made by Mixed Bag Media in Daingean. When we commissioned the film, it was our intention that it would reach audiences to convey both the beauty and inspiration of the Grand Canal in Offaly, and following the 565,000 reach on RTE, news that Aer Lingus have taken it, has exceeded our expectations. It is also great for the artists’ involved, who really deserve this exposure too.”
Catriona Hilliard from Community and Enterprise in Offaly County Council, who was also involved in the film and is working on The Gathering for Offaly said, “this is a wonderful opportunity to promote significant tourism attractions in Offaly in such a creative way to an international audience. We are proud to promote the county in such an imaginative way and shows how important it is for communities to make and shape opportunities for themselves and for tourism in Offaly.”
The film is due to be repeated on RTE later in 2013, but for those who would like a copy, a special edition DVD is on sale locally in Trax Tullamore, Offaly County Council and online at www.mixedbagmedia.com. The film is multi regional so suitable for an overseas gift.
