ROAD resurfacing works, which started on the N52 at Durrow on Wednesday, caused traffic congestion, the Senior Executive Engineer for the Tullamore area, Joe Dooley has admitted.

Speaking at this week's meeting of Tullamore Municipal District, Mr Dooley revealed the contractor has committed to working this Saturday and laying 1,000 tonnes of bitumen that day.

"I want to pay tribute to the contractor for his efforts to alleviate the issue (traffic congestion)," stressed Mr Dooley.

He added that a traffic management system had been put in place with more people involved from Thursday.

Mr Dooley described the roadway as "one of the busiest in the country" and said the contractor had avoided peak times at the local school.

"But they could have left it another half hour to start yesterday (Wednesday)," he added.

The engineer said it is hoped to have the work finished by early next week though admitted that this was "weather dependant".

Cllr Shane Murray said the works at Durrow "had caught a lot of people by surprise".

He added, that from his understanding, the works are being carried out by the National Roads Authority (NRA) rather than Offaly County Council.

The Fianna Fail public representative revealed he received a lot of calls on the issue but paid tribute to the contractor for working this coming Saturday.
