Woman to run 10k for Limerick hospital one year after suffering from stroke

The funds will go to a community hospital in Newcastle West
A woman will run her first 10k for a Limerick hospital, one year after suffering from a stroke.
Nicola McCarthy is raising funds for a St Ita's Community Hospital in Newcastle West, who played "a very important role" in her recovery.
In April 2022, Nicola suffered an ischaemic stroke, which occurs when a blood clot blocks or plugs an artery leading to the brain.
"The weekend before this I had just ran my first 19km in preparation for my first half-marathon," she said on her GoFundMe page. "This resulted in me losing loss of function on the right side of my body and lack of speech. I spent over 10 months in hospital."
She was first treated in CUH, then in UHL, before going to St Ita's Community Hospital in Newcastle West. After which, she was sent to the NRH in Dublin for rehabilitation.
"After the NRH I progressively went back to work and took part in St Camillus' neuro-rehabilitation programme. I began not being able to walk and talk and now I am back to full-time work and I am running my first 10K! Every hospital played a massive role in my life and now I aim to raise money for St Itas Newcastle West as this small community hospital played a very important role in my recovery journey," Nicola said.
