Edenderry motorcycle star Kevin Keyes made a bit of history at the weekend as he claimed his first ever win in the Pirelli National Superstock 600 Championship.
The 2019 BSB racing season kicked off in earnest the weekend before last at Silverstone. The brilliant sunshine over the three days made it an ideal place to be and it was to be an ideal weekend for former Offaly Express Sports Star of the Year winner Kevin Keyes.
Having impressed in free practice and qualifying, where he claimed 7th spot for Sunday's 22-lap race. An eight-minute practice round on Sunday morning saw Kevin find what he called "the sweet spot on the bike," leaving him primed for a tilt at the race win.
The race started in dramatic circumstances as one rider who failed to get off the start line was rear-ended by another rival, immediately sparking a red flag and a halt to proceedings.
Upon the restart, Kevin got off to a flyer, screeching into 4th spot before the first corner. He settled into his race and held 4th spot in the early laps before making his move late.
The leader fell late on as Kevin started to really fire on all cylinders, taking second spot and later first place on the last lap of the race.
After the race Kevin Keyes told us: “I went to Silverstone this weekend with a lot on my mind and to be honest with no expectations from myself."
"It has been the most emotionally demanding weekend of my life. But I came ready to fight. I won the race today but I won it for my boys.”
Team Manager Mark Fisher said: “For Kevin to give us our first win is unbelievable especially with the intensely difficult circumstances that have occurred in his private life this week. The whole team and the rest of the paddock wish him well at this very difficult time for him and his family."
"I have to also give a big thank you to all our sponsors as without you we would not be on the grid," Kevin said.
So after a very tough few days for Kevin Keyes, he finished the weekend completing a number of firsts, namely his first win, first win for his team G&S Racing and a first win for Kawasaki Motorbikes UK on the all-new Ninja 636.
Next up is Oulton Park next weekend and with it being a Bank Holiday weekend in the UK also, the race will take place on Monday.
