National Indoor Juvenile Championships
The All Ireland Indoors came to a conclusion on Saturday and Sunday, March 30 and March 31, with the National Juvenile Championships.
Ava O'Connor had a great weekend and won double gold in her Under 17 800m and 1500m. On Saturday, Ava set a fast pace in the 1500m and quickly got clear of the field. She continued to force the pace throughout and ran 4.42, eight seconds clear of second place. On Sunday, Ava again took the lead early in the 800m, and, after a 31-second first lap, the field quickly spread out.
With Cara Laverty of Derry not far behind, Ava had to push right to the finish. Her time of 2.12:5 was a huge PB and meant that Ava had taken more than 4 seconds off her PB in 2019. James Dunne also won gold on Saturday in the 1500m, sprinting clear of the field with 400m to go. He covered that last 400m in 57 seconds, pushed all the way by Waterford's Jake Bagge. In the 800m, James again pushed hard and was rewarded with a brilliant bronze medal. Others who competed well in 800m races were Sinead Walsh, Ronan Hyland, Ruby Steuven and Philip King.
On Saturday, six of our Track & Field Juveniles competed in the 60m sprints and the long jump. Grace McNally, in the Under 12 girls 60m, ran a lightning fast heat to finish third with a pb of 9:08, but unfortunately she was 200 of a second out from making the final. Her first experience of national competitions and somewhat nervous, Grace will benefit from the experience in future competitions.
Katelyn Farrelly in the Under 17 Girls, Luke Burke in the Under 16 Boys, and Daniel Dowling in the Under 17 Boys, all finished third in their heats but just not enough to make their finals. Evan Farrelly in the Under 15 Boys, and Grainne Lalor in the Under 17 Girls, both reached their respective finals where Evan took the bronze in a time of 7:68 and Grainne finished 6th in a time of 8:02. Katelyn then lined up for the Long Jump where, after the first 3 jumps, lead the competition with a best of 523m. In 2 of her next three jumps, she increased her lead with 532 and then a 546 to take the gold and the National Indoor title.
Jack Saunders, competing in the Under 16B High Jump on Sunday, finished in a solid 8 th place with a pb of 165cm and narrowly grazed his last attempt at 170cm. Cillian Burke in the Under 14 Boys Long Jump, jumped 441cm, a little off his best but finished in a super 6 th place. Grainne Lalor, Under 17 Girls, and Luke Burke Under 16 Boys, both ran strong heats in the 200m to progress to both finals where 6th place for Grainne, and 5 th for Luke, improves both their national rankings. In the 60m Hurdles in the afternoon session, Katelyn Farrelly and Jack Saunders lined up in the Under 17 Girls and Under 16 Boys. Jack ran a pb of 9:52 to finish in 9 th overall, just missing out on that final eight spot. Super improvement from this young man considering his first year at sprint hurdles. Katelyn’s third-place finish of 9:23 in the heat got her lane eight for the final. With a blistering start from the gun, Katelyn hurdled at lightning speed to take the silver medal in an extremely tight finish where 600 of a second was the difference between first and third. Unfortunately, Evan Farrelly had to withdraw from
the hurdles due to illness. It was a great weekend for our track & field juveniles where all finished in the national top 10 in each of their events.

The second race of the Offaly Athletics 5k Road Race Series was run off in Castlejordan on Sunday last, March 31.
