IUAA Irish Universities Cross Country

A small number of Tullamore Harriers athletes made their way to Galway for the IUAA Irish Universities Cross Country hosted by NUIG on Saturday 02nd March. Claire Rafter representing Trinity College Dublin had a solid run finishing 23rd, while Katherine O'Keefe performed well to finish in 32nd.  In the Men's race Matthew Molloy had a breakthrough. Last year he finished 66th in this event. However, in Galway Matthew had a very good run to finish in 35th, a big step forward for the young runner. Well done to all three athletes.

Bohermeen Athletic Club Half Marathon

The Meath Spring Half Marathon certainly did not live up to its seasonal title on Sunday last, March 10. Hail, gales and icy temperatures greeted the 1300 athletes who gathered in the village of Bohermeen for the two lap half marathon course. Eight Tullamore Harriers picked up their well-earned medals and posted good times despite the conditions. First for the club was Lesley Cornally with a great run of 1.34.52, with Ivan Dunne next in 1:38:52. Rita Daly lead our ladies with another great run posting 1:39:34. Mary Daly and Lar Tierney followed with 1:43:17 and 1:43:52 respectively. Next was Paul Hensey (1:46:50), Denis Flynn (1:48:53) and Amanda Owens who posted a PB with a fine run 1:49:04.
Well done all.

Barcelona Marathon

The blue and white of Tullamore Harriers was on view in warmer climates too this on the same day, Sunday 10th March. Some of our crew took to the Spanish sunshine to run the Barcelona Marathon. Ger Lynam, Mark Harpur, Tony Harpur and Michelle Mullaney along with another Harpur brother Paul and Damien Minnock all lined out early on Sunday morning to embark upon the 26.2 miles. First home was Tony Harpur in a super time of 3:18:51 followed by Ger Lynam in 3:30:34. Next was Mark Harpur in 3:31:33 and then Harpur no 3 – Paul who posted 4:02:58. Michelle ran her first marathon side by side with husband Damien with a finish of 4:11:30. It was a poignant occasion as it marked the 10th anniversary of the passing of Colin Dunne who died suddenly while competing the 2009 Barcelona Marathon just 5k from the finish line. Colin was a dear friend of many club members especially Damien. The annual Colin Dunne Primary Schools Track & Field event is dedicated to Colin and always attracts a huge amount of eager primary school children to the club for a fantastic competition. His parent Bernie and Tom along with his sister and friends were also in Barcelona to walk the final 5k of the marathon – the final part of the 2009 marathon that Colin didn’t get a chance to complete. To all – well done.
