Offaly Athletics Report (February 26)

On Sunday last, February 24, Offaly Athletics hosted its first Track & Field Mini League. Approximately 50 juveniles aged between 10 and 14 years of age gathered in Tullamore Harriers Stadium on a chilly but dry morning. The objective of the Mini League is to introduce track and field to the younger athletes in a less formal environment than in championship competition, giving them the opportunity to participate, learn and build confidence while also having lots of fun.

The league was a team contest with athletes from various clubs divided onto mixed teams and each member contributing to the overall score as a result of their given event.

The meet was a huge success and the coaches and officials under the supervision of Ciaran Farrelly (Tullamore Harriers) must all be commended for organising it. The young stars were given great guidance throughout the day especially since some would have tried events for the first time.

Team 5 took the mini-league trophy with 44 points, but they didn’t take it easily. The second-placed team scored 40 points and third scored 39 points, making for a very tight contest.

Well done to all on the six teams and by all accounts a super day was had by all. Again thanks to all the officials involved. The next Mini League will be in March but the date is yet to be confirmed.
