Tullamore Harriers Club Report (February 19)

Silver Jump for Jordan

Congratulations to Jordan Hoang who took a silver medal at the Irish Life National Senior Indoor Track & Field Championships held in Abbotstown on Saturday, February 16. Jordan’s triple jump of 14.18 was second to Queens University athlete Mark Burton who took the gold with 14.29.

Our other athletes in the Championships were: Liam Brady who finished 10th in the 3000m with a time of 8.32.73. Nadine Donegan qualified for the 1500m final taking 9th place in 4.42.10. Sean Donegan was 5th in his heat in the 400m with 53.73. Katherine O’Keefe competed in the 800m posting 2.14.35 in her heat.

Well done to all on your performances, competing against the best of the best in the country.

Athletics Ireland Star Award for Ava

Congratulations to Ava O’Connor who received a star award at the Athletics Ireland Awards Ceremony in the Tullamore Court Hotel on Saturday 16th February. Ava has made steady progress in the last three years and has become a stand out athlete at both provincial and national levels. As she has won numerous medals at these levels her PBs have improved significantly. As a fourteen-year old, she ran 2.13 and 4.37 for 800m and 1500m respectively. If she can continue to improve in the coming years she has a great future in the sport. She trains diligently each week in Tullamore and also is enthusiastic every Sunday morning on Croghan Hill. Her dedication is matched by her parents Sinead and Liam's commitment in bringing Ava to all her training sessions and competitions.

Ava’s medal wins in 2018 as follows:

1st U16 Leinster Cross Country; 1st U16 Leinster Indoor 800m; 1st U16 Leinster Indoor 1500m; 1st U16
Leinster Outdoor 800m; 1st U16 Leinster Outdoor 1500m; 1st Junior Leinster Schools 1500m; 1st U16

All Ireland Outdoor 1500m; 2nd Junior Girls All Ireland Schools 1500m; 2nd Tailteann Games 1500m.

Steuven Wins Silver at Leinster Schools

In mild conditions and with good underfoot conditions, eight of Tullamore Harriers juveniles competed in Santry Demesne in the Leinster Schools Cross Country Championships. Ruby Steuven was the standout in the day when she came second in the Junior Girls race. She had been neck and neck with Kilkenny girl Hannah O'Keefe all the way and only lost out in the sprint finish. This is Ruby's second Leinster medal in less than a week, as she won silver over 800m the previous weekend.

Ava O'Connor, Luke Duffy, Laura Mooney and Danielle Donegan qualified easily for the All Irelands, while Christopher Byrne, Dearbhail Cuddy and Emily Cunningham only narrowly missed out on All Ireland qualification. Well done to all.

Rás na hÉireann 2019

It was windy but the sun shone and the course was perfect for cross country running at the 50th Rás na hÉireann, held on Sunday, February 17. 28 of our Tullamore Harriers juvenile athletes ranging from under 9 to under 15 travelled to the Battle of the Boyne site to take part. It is always an enjoyable day in an ideal venue and our athletes look forward to it every year. The first 6 athletes across the finish line get individual medals and the first 4 members of a team across the line achieve the team result.

We started with our under 9’s in the 500m – Ailbhe Coll came in 8 th and Caoimhe White was 26th. This was their first outing to Rás na hÉireann where they gave a good account of themselves and no doubt we will see them competing here again in the future. Next to the starting line for Tullamore Harriers were our under 11 girls – this group are progressing well in training with their coach Richie Faulkner. Our first individual medal went to Maeve Duffy who had a powerful run and finished in 3rd
place. She was ably followed by Ailish Walsh (20th ), Áine Larkin (28th ) & Roisin Cotter (32nd ). The girls were the 6th team home.

Unfortunately, our under 11 boys didn’t have four athletes to make up a team but our second individual medal was achieved here by Conor Murtagh who crossed the line in 2nd place in a time of 3:33. The under 11’s ran 1000m. Jack Cunningham was the second Harrier in 24th followed very closely by Guy Larkin in 34th place.

The Girls under 13 were impressive – they got first club in the team results, and 3rd and 4th individual medals were achieved here also. First home was Andrea Ryan in 3rd place, followed by Eabhadh Multaney Kelly (5th), with Eimear Cotter (12th ) and Saoirse Murtagh (14th ), achieving a team score of 34 points. Polly Duffy was just 6 seconds after Saoirse in 17th place with Rachel Donegan another two seconds in 20th position and Kara Daly a further 4 seconds in 22nd place. 1500m all done & dusted by these 7 young ladies in 6:12.

Another exciting race was up next with the under 13 boys, again running 1500m. Our fifth individual medal went to Cian Horkan who crossed the finish line in 5th place followed by his brother Shane Horkan in 7th place. Cian Multaney Kelly finished in 16th place with Luke Mahon 18th, Dylan Leonard 22nd & JP Larkin 23rd. A few new recruits in this group who are showing great promise! The boys achieved second club in the team results with 46 points.

The Girls under 15 race was 2500m. We had 6 athletes in this group. First team home was local club Dunleer AC but our Tullamore Harriers girls were hot on their heels in 2nd place with 46 points.

Sinead Walsh brought home our 6th individual medal in this race crossing the finish in 5th place. Jane Maher was 9th, Emily Cunningham 11th, Roisin Betson 21st, Aisling Cotter 25th and Imelda Lambe 33rd. The girls worked well together and encouraged each other.

All in all, it was a very satisfying day at Rás na hÉireann. Our Juvenile athletes represented themselves & their club very well. We are very proud of them.

Gneeveguilla Athletic Club 5k Road Race

Jim Langan travelled to Kerry for the Gneeveguilla AC Valentine’s 5k on Saturday, February 9. Jim was first o75 in a time of 27:18. Well done Jim.
