National Senior & Even Ages Cross Country Championships

The purpose-built cross country course at the national sports campus in Abbotstown provided a tough test for athletes at last Sunday’s National Senior Cross Country championships. The best of the country’s athletic talent was on display on what was a bitterly cold day. The Harriers ladies team of Katy O’Keefe, Nadine Donegan, Maire-Triona Keane and Sinead Rigney put in a great effort to secure gold medals in Grade B of the competition and were aided by Aisling O’Connor and Caroline Donnellan from Edenderry AC in making up the six-person county team achieving a sixth place finish there.

The men’s team of Liam Brady, Pauric Ennis, Padraig Berry, Jason Donegan, Michael Conneely, Robbie Westman, Rory Farrell and Peter Benner competed in an impressively competitive field over 10,000m and all performed well but unfortunately failed to medal. Well done to all who represented the club so well.

Harriers results: Ladies 8000m: Katy O’Keefe 33.00; Nadine Donegan 34.02, Maire-Triona Keane 34.46; Sinead Rigney 35.07.
Men’s 10,000m: Liam Brady 36.11; Pauric Ennis 36.22; Padraig Berry 37.24; Jason Donegan 38.19; Michael Conneely 40.25; Robbie Westman 40.34; Peter Bennet 42.01.

Harriers Juveniles

Huge crowds attended the national Country championships at the weekend in Abbotstown in Dublin. Twenty juniors and Juveniles from Tullamore Harriers made the trip and there was success across the ages. Luke Duffy was first on in the boys U14 race and Luke was in a break away pack tight from the start. He was always pushing the pace and fought his way through muck and over hills. In the final sprint he held on to fifth place gaining a national medal. This is a big run for Luke when you consider that he is out of his age in this grade and competing against lads a year older than him. The girls U16 were next. Ava O'Connor led the charge. In conditions that wouldn't suit Ava she battled hard and finished 12th and gained a national medal.

Dearbhail Cuddy, Laura Mooney and Cara Martin also had solid runs and the team finished eight. In the U18 race Danielle Donegan had another fine performance to finish 11th. In the Junior Men's competition, the blue and white was worn by Christopher Whittle, Matthew Molloy, Ethan Dunican, Connor Butler and Cian Martin. The lads raced hard all the way and we're still passing people on the fourth lap.

NIA Live

Three Tullamore juveniles made their way to Abbotstown on Thursday 23rd to compete in the NIA Live events being organised at this the new National Indoor Arena. All three are sixteen and competed in a tough 3000m race. Aaron Mangan led the Tullamore lads home in 9.13 with James Dunne finishing in 9.47 and Cian Martin running 10.21. These runs are positive marks for the upcoming indoor seasons and shows the aerobic development training of the last few months has paid off.

Indoor training for some club athletes got under way for some club athletes last Wednesday. There around fifty young Harriers in attendance and in addition the usual mix of sprint and distance work there was great work done on long jump technique and relay strategies. Thanks to all parents for making the trip over and to our coaches for making the extra effort too!

A smaller group than usual made the trip to Croghan on Sunday due to the numbers attending the All Ireland's but the successes of recent weeks show the benefits of hill training which allows for plyometric style workout on a natural environment. Training in Croghan will continue at the usual 9am start each Sunday.

The annual club Juvenile Christmas party takes place at the cinema in Tullamore on Thursday, November 30. You should be there at 5.40pm. Afterwards the group will go to Supermacs (one of our club sponsors). Thanks to Annamarie for making all the arrangements for this annual event!
