The 3rd National TY Schools Safety Table Quiz was organized by the Midland branch of NISO (National Irish Safety Organisation) and hosted recently by AIT. The venue was the Nursing and Health Sciences Building.

Seven teams competed for the trophy and prizes including Our Lady’s Bower Secondary, Athlone Community School (ACC), and Marist College. They were competing for the ‘John Flanagan’ Cup.

Two ACC teams tied for 1st following the final round of questions and were only separated following a tiebreaker round. The winning Athlone Community College team consisted of Sean Duffy, Irene Finnerty and Andrea Whyte, with the team of Damien Kelly, Luke Coffey and Neil Hannon coming second. ACC also supplied the 3rd placed team; Rory Lyons, Shane Whyte and Eoin Roche. Our Lady’s Bower team (Chloe O’Rourke Harris, Olivia Riordan, and Veena Dandu) were placed 4th.

The winning team members each received a €100 each and a trophy, along with a trophy for the school. The runners-up team members each received a €50 cheque and a trophy for the school.

NISO stands for National Irish Safety Organisation, a voluntary organisation who promote safety in the workplace for over 50 years. They run courses on safety nationally including in AIT, an annual All Ireland company safety quiz (hosted in Athlone in 2015) and the All Ireland safety awards ceremony (hosted in Athlone in 2016). Last year the NISO Midland branch initiated a new quiz to promote safety in the workplace among young persons namely the TY safety table quiz. It is loosely based on the annual company based NISO Safety Table Quiz. The 2018 final was hosted by AIT on the 18th October.
