The National Dairy Council celebrated the Dare to Dairy with Mary competition when the three lucky finalists brought their cakes and met the Queen of Cakes herself, Mary Berry at the Heritage Hotel in Killenard.

The National Dairy Council had announced the three finalists would bring their winning cakes to the Ploughing Championships in Offaly on Wednesday, September 19, but that plan fell through when Storm Ali resulted in the cancellation of Wednesday.

The NDC received a huge volume of entries from all over the country and baking enthusiasts really impressed the judges who included Chandima Gamage Head Pastry Chef at Dromoland Castle, Food Writer and judge of Great Irish Bake Off, Lilly Higgins and Ciara Leahy, Consumer Editor of the Irish Farmers’ Journal.

The three finalists pictured were Anne Dunne, a Home Economics teacher who lives on a dairy, beef and tillage farm in Mitchelstown, she created Hazelnut Sable Biscuits with Ricotta Mouse, Caramelised Pears and Crushed Praline. Sonia Steedman from Screggan in Co, Offaly created a Pistachio, Rosewater, Raspberry and White Chocolate Cake and Natasha Daly from Kerry, originally from Birr, who created Wild Blackberry and Sloe Gin cakes.

All three met the former Great British Bake Off judge at the Heritage Hotel in Killenard last week.
