Rosenallis hold two goal edge in cup clash
The two main contenders for the Division 1 title went up against each other at The Grove on Saturday morning and it was the home side who proved the stronger.
Killeigh goalkeeper Kevin Beirne was the busier when the game started denying Enda Gorman after eight minutes following a fine pass from Gary Hoffmisstor and on 13 minutes Kevin advanced and saved John Lennon’s shot from just inside the penalty area.
Killeigh forced a free kick on the left of the home sides penalty area on 17 minutes and the lively Shane Dolan’s shot was well held by Joe Shelly. The next chance fell to Rosenallis when a half cleared corner fell to Enda Gorman and his shot just dipped over the bar.
The deadlock was broken on 34 minutes when the following a good passing move from the back won Rosenallis a corner. The ball was swung in and a header from Cillian Cillalay hit the post and reacting quickest was Enda Gorman who shot home from close range.
The home side almost made it two just before the break when some slick passing from Lennon and Cillalay put Gorman through and his chip went over Beirne but dropped just outside the right post.
The second half saw Rosenallis start where they had left of passing well out from the back and 11 minutes into it Lennon and Hoffmisstor created an opening for Oliver Peake who shot over the advancing Beirne to double the lead.
This goal seemed to spur Killeigh and Shane Dolan shot just wide after good approach play from Ben Dunne and Paddy Downey. Killeigh pulled a goal back on 63 minutes when Paddy Downey showed great control in the penalty area slipped past a defender and shot past Shelly.
However the home side weathered the storm and regained their two goal advantage with 11 minutes left to play when Cillian Cillalay controlled a cross from Hartnett and shot home from 18 yards out.
These are two teams with contrasting styles who on a wet windy morning served up an entertaining game and with a second leg to follow in two weeks the tie is not over yet .
Impressive for the visitors were all their defenders with Dolan, Scully and Downey in attack while for the home side the passing from their midfielders Lennon, Cillalay, Hartnett and Burke was very good indeed. The passing game played by Rosenallis overall enjoyable to watch although Killeigh will feel they have a chance of redrssing the score in the second leg
