Kavanagh scores again

NIAMH Kavanagh is quickly making a name for herself on the international rugby front after scoring her second try in just her second game for her country. The Walsh Island winger touched down in the corner in the 21st minute in Ireland’s Six Nations game against France in Ashbourne on Friday.

The score got Ireland back into the game after conceding two early penalties. It remained 6-5 at the break but a try from French prop Christelle Chobet and a penalty six minutes from time from replacement Aurelie Bailon made it 14-5 to the visitors.

Ireland struck back with a try from full-back Niamh Briggs which she converted. The home side pushed for a winning drop-goal but time ran out before they could get their noses in front.

Speaking after the game, Niamh Kavanagh said she was privileged to be on the Irish team.

“I’m very lucky and privileged. There’s loads of competition there. I don’t know what way to describe it really but it’s fantastic. France really put it up to us but I think it shows how strong of a side we are because we stood up and gave it everything we could.”

Ireland’s next game is against Scotland and Niamh is looking forward to the game.

“I think we can really put it to Scotland after today’s performance. It shows that we are strong together and building as a unit and that’s thanks to the girls and thanks to the coaches.”
