Derry Rovers all set for eagerly anticipated Liverpool trip

Derry Rovers Schoolboys travel to the UK this week to take on their underage counterparts at Woolton FC in Liverpool. The trip sees three teams in action, playing twice in two days for a weekend of football to remember.

The teams leave Edenderry in the early hours this Thursday, travelling by coach and ferry to one of the largest clubs in Liverpool. Indeed, there are over 30 underage teams in the Woolton set-up and they have a long list of players who have gone on to professional careers.

The three teams will be in action over Thursday and Friday, where they will be greeted on arrival by Derry Rovers Academy Patron, ex Liverpool and Republic of Ireland star, John Aldridge.

John has assisted the club in the organisation of the trip and on Saturday, the boys and their coaches will be guests of honour at the Tranmere Rovers v Charlton Athletic game in Prenton Park.

“We had a number of invitations to bring teams over, following the recent Legends events”, says Derry Rovers Chairman, Pat McBride.

“It has been a long-held ambition of the club to be bringing our schoolboys for a football-based trip, and I am delighted we will be visiting a club of such well-reknown as Woolton.”

In fact, Rovers have reached out across Europe and have had invitations to travel to tournaments in Germany and Hungary amongst others in the UK.

The players will play their first game within hours of arrival and a good recovery will be on the cards as they return to action the following day. With Liverpool recently being a City of Culture, there will be plenty to keep the players relaxed in the evening and a full itinerary has been meticulously put together by the committee at the club.

“We’re looking forward to it with great anticipation and I know the players are buzzing. It will be great to meet up with John and all the people at Woolton who we’ve been in contact with while arrangements were being made.”
