The third annual Ronnie Walsh Memorial Tag Rugby Blitz took place at Tullamore Rugby Club on Saturday, June 2 and it was fitting that ‘The Ronnies’ came out on top on the day.
There were teams old and new and some travelled from Dublin, Athlone, Carlow, Birr and Tipperary. Sixteen teams played on the day, being divided between plate and cup.
The weather held up quite well for the group games but the rain came at the semi final stages. In the plate semi-final Here for the Beer, Synergy, Broncos and Birr came through and Birr captained on the day by Andrew Carney had a decisive win over newcomers, the Broncos, captained by David Brophy.
Tullamore Blues, Eskimo Joes, The Ronnies and Cobras merged to compete in the cup semi finals with The Ronnies victorious over Eskimo Joes in the final.
At the presentations afterwards, Marguerite and Eddie Walsh presented the Ronnie Walsh Memorial Plate and Cup and trophies to the respective winners and runners up. Verona Walsh spoke on behalf of the Walsh family and thanked all those for attending, playing and organising the successful event.
Thanks were also extended to Hugh Lynchs for sponsoring the trophies and the referees Martin Nunan, Ciaran Lynch, Declan O’Reilly, Dinny Magner, John Byrnes, Ivor Scully and Adrian Hanley who kept the games flowing.
All the games were played in the spirit of the day, a fitting tribute to the memory of Ronnie. The summer league starts on Thursday, June 7.
