Cunningham reels in top prize

Anglers from all around the midlands recently attended the Annual Jim Coyne memorial fishing competition in Tullamore.

Now in its second year, the competition was organised by Grand Canal Anglers fishing club in Tullamore. Over 25 anglers attended the event on a glorious sunny day with plenty of fish caught by everybody. The competition started at noon and fishing continued till 4pm that day.

Some great bags of fish were caught with local tackle supplier Johnny Cunningham coming home in first place with a very impressive 14lb of fish. Second was local angler John Daly with another impressive weight of 6.8lb of fish. Third place went to last year’s winner, local councillor Brendan Killeavy with 4.7lb. Fourth place went to club chairman Padraig Carroll with 4.6lb.

The club would like to thank Ann and Linda Coyne for making the presentations and also thanks to Jamie’s Restaurant, Tullamore for their continuing support and sponsorship of the competition.

Grand Canal Angling club is now up and running for two years. The club is constantly promoting fishing on the canal and encouraging young people to take up angling. The club also organised a clean up of the canal a number of weeks back with the help of local residents Jimmy Ryan, Mick Gannon and Pj McCabe. Over 20 bags of rubbish was picked up from the Kilbeggan Bridge to Boland’s lock and we are very grateful to everybody who got involved and helped with that.

Over the last year and after seeing the need for it , the club organised for a disabled fishing ramp to be installed on the canal. This ramp will ensure that people with a disability will be able to fishing safely and enjoy the canal. The ramp has space for two anglers to fish together and has two car parking spaces directly behind it. This is a great facility for the town for our local wheelchair users and also a good attraction for disabled anglers from around the midlands to come to tullamore and enjoy our beautiful canal.

We would like to thank Tullamore Town Council, Tullamore Credit Union for their contribution towards the project. The club also would like to thank Louis Bryne and Paul Buckley from Waterways Ireland for their contribution in carrying the works.

We would ask people to respect the ramp and to only park there if fishing on the ramp.

Anybody that would like to join the club and who is interested in promoting fishing and the canal can contact pagraig on 0851537209
