Victorious Ballinagar N.S. with the Colin Dunne Memorial Cup

After torrential rain on Thursday evening and early Friday morning it was to the amazement of officials and that the Colin Dunne Primary Schools Track and Field competition passed off in relatively good conditions with the sun even appearing for the prize presentation ceremony. It was great to see new winners in both the Boys and Girls competitions with Scoil Eoin Phoil and Ballinagar N.S. winning through in the face of stiff competition.

There were also awards presented by Mick Gillespie to the five Harriers Juvenile athletes who have represented Ireland in the past year- James Mulligan, Cara Todd, Chinnie Izuchukwu, Darragh McNamara and Dean Power.

With the maximum score available being 150 it was amazing to see both first and second place in the girls competition amass really big scores. Ballinagar N.S. won the competition with 137.5 points just narrowly edging out the girls from Presentation Primary in Portarlington who scored 136 points. For the Ballinagar girls Emma Darby led the way by winning the sprint in 10.71 seconds almost half a second faster than her nearest challenger. In the 600m Caitlin McDarby finished fifth to keep the Ballinagar girls in contention. With Aisling McDermott winning the Long Jump the girls from Ballinagar had a strong lead. After the shot putt they still held the lead and a fine second place finish in the relay confirmed the victory of Ballinagar for the first time in the Offaly Primary Schools Track and Field and taking home the Colin Dunne Cup.
