Mullins to the ‘four’ on day two at Punchestown

Trainer Willie Mullins completed a 456/1 four-timer on Wednesday’s five-race card at Punchestown.

Leading the way was Champagne Fever (11/4 Fav) , winner of last month’s Grade 1 Weatherbys Champion Bumper at Cheltenham, who followed up in the Grade 1 Betchronicle.com Champion INH Flat Race.

Mullins’ son Patrick steered the five-year-old to a seven and a half length success and the winner could head straight over fences next season.

“He’s a super horse,” said the winning trainer. “Patrick said he was only idling up the straight, he just gallops all day. The horse has huge reserves.

“He obviously stays and he jumps well and there is chance we could do what we did with Florida Pearl next season and go straight over fences. He seems to have huge ability and it just shows how badly we got the tactics wrong last time.”

Joe Reardon, representing owners Rich and Susannah Ricci, added: “He is a serious horse - a very serious horse. We always knew that, but especially after that performance in that ground.

“Patrick was very wise to cross over to the stands’ rail and straighten up. That’s the real sign of a good horse to be able to pick up like he did today. He looked beaten for a few strides but found more. I think the plan will be for him to go straight over fences next season.”

The four-timer was completed when Flash Of Genius (11/4) impressively won the concluding At The Races Flat Race.
