Winning start in league for Offaly footballers

THE Offaly Senior Football team got their 2009 Allianz League Division 3 campaign off to a winning start on Sunday with a 1-13 to 1-10 win over Fermanagh.

Allianz GAA Football league Division 3

Offaly 1-13

Fermanagh 1-10

A goal ten minutes into the second half from Ciaran McManus, albeit with the assistance of a sizeable deflection, proved to be the pivotal score.

Offaly started strongly against the wind and by the 13th minute had opened up a 0-4 to 0-1 lead.

A goal against the run of play for Fermanagh from Daryl Keenan on the rebound after Alan Mulhall had made a brilliant save to deny the excellent Ciaran Flaherty levelled matters.

It was nip and tuck for the rest of the half but just before the break Fermanagh were reduced to 14 men when Martin O'Brien was sent off following an off the ball clash with Ken Casey.

Offaly went to the break 0-9 to 1-5 ahead but the visitors scored the first two points of the second half to edge into the lead.

A point from Niall McNamee and a goal from Ciaran McManus steadied Offaly and the new look side held on relatively comfortably for the rest of the game.
