Wexford hold edge in previous meetings
This Saturday marks the 33rd meeting of Wexford and Offaly in the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship. Their first meeting was a first round game, at Jones’ Road in 1898 -a noteworthy occasion as it was the introduction of the sideline cut for the first time
It is remarkable that Wexford failed to score in that game - with Offaly managing only one point in their second meeting the following year.
Despite Offaly winning that opening encounter, Wexford dominated the next 11 meetings winning 9 to Offaly’s 1, with Wexford conceding a walk-over in 1924. However, the last 20 engagements have been more evenly shared with both sides winning on ten occasions.
In all Wexford have won 19 of the 32 games to date, and amazingly despite the fact that their have been a number of close encounters, particularly over the past two decades, these sides have yet to finish on level terms in the Championship.
Amazingly this is first time that Offaly will have played at home against Wexford in the Championship.
The last meeting was in 2009 which started the home and away agreement was played in Wexford Park. All other games were wither played in Croke Park (Jones Road) or in Nowlan Park in Kilkenny
