Rhode and Clara impress on first weekend of Senior Football Championship

RHODE and Clara were the most impressive sides on the opening week of the Tullamore Court Hotel Senior Football Championship while there was a dramatic climax in the game of the weekend on Sunday afternoon.

The weekend’s action got underway in Tubber on Friday evening where a very impressive Clara side comfortably saw off Ballycumber in Group 1. In a team showing six changes from that which lost to Edenderry in last year’s county final, including the absence of Thomas Deehan and Joe Quinn, Clara lead by as many as 11 early in the second-half before running out seven point winners.

In the same group on Sunday, Walsh Island came out on top in the clash of the green and white hoops with a 0-11 to 0-8 win over St Rynagh’s in Killurin. St Rynagh’s will still be wondering how they contrived to lose a game where they created nearly twice as many scoring opportunities as their opponents. However chances count for nothing if not converted and on the day Walsh Island were far more clinical which was the main difference between the sides.

There was a double header of games in O’Connor Park and the first could hardly have been any more one sided as Rhode pummelled Ferbane from the start before easing back to win by 17 points.

The second game was touted as the game of the weekend and it certainly delivered as defending champions Edenderry squared off against Tullamore.

Edenderry led late in the game but a goal from Shane Dooley in injury-time snatched a draw for the blues to set up a very interesting second round of games.

The game between Gracefield and Erin Rovers was postponed following the tragic passing of Gracefield’s Kieran McEvoy on Saturday afternoon.
