Offaly unlucky to lose opener

The Offaly Ladies Footballers opened their league campaign at home to Limerick in Gracefield last Sunday and they can consider themselves unlucky to come out on the wrong side of a three point defeat.

Offaly lead by 0-9 to 1-3 after an impressive first half but they struggled for scores after the break while Limerick added another 1-5 to their total.

Offaly had a great first half with scores from Kym Furey, Therese Hickey, Orlagh Heavey, Amy Kerrigan and Elisha Hunston. Aoife Byrne and Orla Daly did well in the back line with an outstanding performance from the ever reliable corner back Michelle Guinan.

Niamh Malone had a good game in the right wing back position along with Christine McDonnell and Aishling O’Connor. The midfield players of Orlagh Heavey and Emma Dalton played a blinder while good fielding of the ball from Riona Byrne, Amy Kerrigan and Lorraine Keena on the half forward line enabled the full forward line of Elisha Hunston, Kym Furey and Therese Hickey to score six points between them in the first half.

However this was a game of two halves and it looked like a different Limerick team that emerged onto the pitch in the second half and showed the Offaly ladies no mercy with great play from their midfielder Niamh Richardson and full forward Catherine Murphy.

Offaly put just two points on the score board in the second half while Limerick accumulated 1-5. Offaly had a few chances of goal but just couldn’t manage to get the ball in the back of the Limerick net. The Offaly girls seemed to tire midway through the second half, but over all a good performance from the Faithfull Ladies
