Offaly Under 21s lose out to Carlow

FOR the third succesive year the Offaly Under 21 footballers have exited the championship at the first hurdle.

Cadbury Leinster U-21 FC Round 1

Offaly 1-15

Carlow 2-14 (aet)

In a tempestuous affair O'Connor Park, Offaly looked on course for the win during extra-time but a late goal from Carlow midfielder Brendan Murphy settled the tie in the visitors' favour.

Offaly started incredibly slowly and found themselves 1-6 to 0-2 behind after just 14 minutes with the goal coming from Eddie Byrne.

The Faithful County settled into the game and by half-time had closed the gap slightly although Carlow still lead comfortably by 1-8 to 0-6.

The home side dominated the second-half and a goal from Michael Brazil saw them fight back to get on level terms by the end of normal time at 1-11 apiece.

With both teams returned to their full compliment of 15 apiece for the extra-time, Offaly had the better of the exchanges and and looked the more likely to win until Murphy's late goal settled the game.
