Offaly overcome Kilkenny in Walsh Cup

JOE Dooley's Offaly will travel to face Galway in the semi-final of the Walsh Cup after a creditable 1-16 to 1-13 win over Kilkenny on Sunday in O'Connor Park.

Walsh Cup SH

Offaly 1-16

Kilkenny 1-13

Offaly fought back from six points adrift to clip the wings of reigning Walsh Cup, NHL, Leinster and All-Ireland champions. It was Offaly's first senior win over Kilkenny since beating them in the 1998 All-Ireland final.

Kilkenny led by 0-9 to 0-3 after 30 minutes and they looked well on course to secure a semi-final date with Galway.

However, a scrambled Ger Healion goal on the stroke of half time propelled Offaly back into contention.

Martin Boran's opportunist 38th minute goal after a defensive lapse provided Kilkenny with a 1-10 to 1-7 cushion and they'd two points to spare, 1-13 to 1-11, with seventeen minutes remaining.
