Offaly ladies lose out in league semi-final

editorial image

Offaly bowed out of the league at the semi-final stage against a very strong Longford side in Mullingar on Sunday.

Early goals gave Longford the edge early in the game and despite their best efforts, Offaly could not overcome these early setbacks. The final scoreline does not do justice to Offaly’s determined efforts on the day as they battled from start to finish

Longford already had two goals on the board when they were awarded a penalty in the 15th minute which was well taken by Edel Quinn and Offaly ‘keeper Kelley Cunningham had no chance of stopping the shot.

Offaly came fighting back and were awarded a penalty themselves for a high tackle on Lorraine Kenna. The excellent Mairead Daly from the St Rynagh’s blasted the ball in the back of the Longford goal. The half time score was Offaly 1-4 to Longford 3-6.

Longford made some tactical changes at half time and brought on their free taker Claire Greene who put five points on the score board along with Ashling Reynolds who put four points over to edge them into an unassailable lead.

Scores for Offaly in the second half came from Lorraine Kenna, Mairead Daly and substitute Claire O’ Brien.

Longford could have had at least three more goals in the second half except for the heroic goal keeping skills of Kelly Cunningham.

Offaly now will begin preparations for Leinster Championship and the All Ireland Series.

Offaly: Kelly Cunningham; Orla Daly, Christine McDonald, Michelle Guinan, Triona McDonald, Siobhain Flannery, Niamh Malone, Orlagh Heavey, Emma Dalton, Mairead Daly (1-2), Therese Hickey, Kym Furey (0-1), Lorraine Kenna (0-3), Amy Kerrigan, Emma Corcoran, Alisha Hunston (0-1), Riona Byrne for Orla Daly, Maebh Coleman for Michelle Guinan, Evelyn Russell for Niamh Malone, Claire O’ Brien (0-1) for Kym Furey
