Offaly girls lose out to Westmeath in Shield Final

The Offaly U-14 girls were beaten in the Leinster A Shield Final by Westmeath on Sunday last in Portarlington GAA grounds.

Offaly won the toss and chose to play with the wind in the first half, but unfortunately they did not take advantage of the strong wind and only managed four points in the first half while a very strong Westmeath scored 2-1.

Westmeath were in total control. Their mid-field cleaned up and they were the better team on the day and worthy winners. The Offaly full back line of Sarah Cummins, Nicole Farrelly and Orla Wheelan were absolutely superb, and played their hearts out, Amy Gavin- Mangan played well in the middle of the field, even with a broken finger but alas once again it was not to be Offaly’s day.

Offaly team and Panel: Lauren Dunne, Sarah Cummins, Nicole Farrelly, Orla Wheelan, Alana Stewart, Roisin Egan, sinead Byrne, Rachel Seery, Amy Gavin-Mangan, Eimear Lawless, Claudia Darcy, Ciara Galvin, Vicki Carey, Ellie McEvoy, Maeve Brereton. Sarah Hynan, Amy Lawlor, Rebecca Feeney, Amanda Kenna, Jessie Nolan, Ciannait Goulding, Katie Dumpleton, Mary Dempsey, Aoife McCann, Niamh Millner and Aoibheann McKnight.

Offaly Ladies Football would like to thank the Management team of Tony Guinan, Pauric Malone, Gabriel Gorman, Laura O’Meara and Deirdre Brickland-Kearney for their time and commitment they have given to the team for the friendship they have shown to these young girls. Thanks also to the Tullamore Court Hotel for the lovely meal they provided for the team on their return and to Cappincur GAA Club for the use of their facilities for training.

The Offaly U-14’s will be in the U-14 All Ireland Blitz next Saturday in Kinnegad and we wish them the best of luck.

Offaly under 16’s will play Westmeath in the Semi-final of the Leinster Championship next Sunday in Clara. Clara will be officially opening their new pitch and as a curtain raiser to the main game the girls will play first.
