Tullamore Harriers’ Liam Brady battled his way through the mud even overcoming an early fall to help Ireland claim a team silver medal at the Celtic International Cross Country Championships took place in Edinburgh on Saturday last.

Teams from Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Ulster competed for medals in the Celtic International which was incorporated into the Great North Cross Country event.

Liam was running in the U-23, 6,000m event and he started strongly but took a fall on the first of three laps. He was up quickly and continued to battle all the way to the finish, coming home in 11th place in 21 minutes 49 seconds. With Emmett Jennings (DSD) in 3rd and Liam Tremble (Metro St Brigid’s) in 7th, the Irish team took second place behind Scotland with Wales in third.

Ireland’s European CC champion, Fionnuala Britton, ran a great race to win the senior women’s race.

Three Olympic Champions, Kenenisa Bekele, Asbel Kiprop and Brimin Kipruto, competed in the Men’s 3k event and it was a great opportunity for Liam Brady and his Irish team mates to see these great athletes in action.

The muddy conditions sapped the strength from the legs of all the athletes including Bekele and Kipruto who were well beaten in their race.
