It was an “outstanding night”. So said organiser Marie Corcoran of the 7th annual Portarlington Charity Gala Ball which attracted more than 250 people last Friday who kicked up their heels to the recession while raising money for local charities at the Heritage Golf and Spa Resort, Killenard.
Guest MCs on the night were again society couple solicitor Gerald Kean and the beautiful Lisa Murphy, who have generously lent their free support every year since the ball began.
“The style was like the Oscars, Lisa said she had never seen anything like the classy style,” said Marie who together with Maria Molloy and Colette Kennedy, dreamt up the idea of a gala ball and have been involved in raising thousands for local charities since.
This year they chose Portarlington Lions Club as the beneficiaries, who will in turn distribute the money to many local charities. Gerry Dunne, President of Port Lions, thanked them for their continued hard work,
Guests enjoyed a three course meal with wine and a prize raffle at each table, followed by Keith McDonald’s showband and a disco into the small hours.
“The meal was just fabulous, the wine was flowing, and when the band struck up, they were nearly fighting their way on to the dancefloor. Many of these people don’t even go out at Christmas, but they want to help charities,” said Marie.
The trio are already working on next year’s event.
“The plans are well underway, there is a great interest in booking tables already,” said Marie, who thanked everybody in the locality for their support and loyalty.
