Golden Wedding Anniversary
Congratulations to Eamon & Rose Doyle St Brigid’s Sq, Portarlington who celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on January 29. Eamon & Rose were married in St Mary’s Church Raheen on January 29, 1962 by Rev Fr J Walsh who was then a Curate in Geashill.
Fr Walsh celebrated Mass last Sunday in their daughter Carol Hoey’s home. Celebrating their day was their daughters Martina (O’Reilly), Rosemary (Madden), Carol (Hoey) & Tracy (Hyland), their sons Paul, Aidan & Kevin. Their 17 Grandchildren & 5 Great-grandchildren. Their extended family & friends.
Eamon was a former player with Portarlington GAA football club. His sporting interests since his retirement from Eircom are a few rounds of Golf in Garryhinch Golf Club. Wishing Eamon & Rose good health & happiness for the future.
Social Services bingo will resume on Wednesday, February 1 at 8.30pm in the Social Services Centre. Looking forward to seeing you all.
Arlington Soccer Club would like to say a big thanks to all who took part in the Table Quiz last Friday night and those who helped on the night & donated prizes etc. Special thanks to Brendan McManus who stood in as quiz master and posed some very serious questions. A good night was had by all & a successful night for the Club.
Another wonderful, but busy weekend for Oisin Hoey from Droughill who won the Leinster Master’s Indoor 56LB for distance event in the National Indoor arena in Nenagh on Sunday, January 29. Oisin was also placed 2nd in the Shot-Putt event. Oisin adds these wins to the Irish Indoor shot-putt title he won just over two weeks ago. Well done.
St Michaels AC
Best wishes to the Juvenile Girls U/13 Team who will be competing in the All Ireland Cross Country Championships in Roscommon next Sunday. Congratulations to John Fenlon who was 2nd Individual in the Laois Novice Road Race last Sunday January 29, and the Mens team who were 2nd team overall. Congratulations also to the St Michaels AC Womens team who were 3rd in the road race on the same day. Congratulations to John White and David Wilkes who both competed in the Leinster Indoors athletics last Sunday also, both winning two Silver medals in their respective events.
Running for Beginners
Running for beginner’s sessions takes place every Tuesday and Thursday evening in McCann Park. Each session is €2 per night. This is an excellent way to get fit for life, stay in shape and enjoy participating in the athletics club. New Members are always welcome - Congratulations to the new members who completed the 3k road race last Sunday.
Social Services AGM
The 41st AGM of Portarlington Social Services/Meals on Wheels took place last Friday January 27. Officers elected for the coming year were: Chairperson - Ann (Bourke) Dunne. Secretary - Geraldine O’Reilly. Treasurer – Eva Johnson. Card Secretary – Breda Dunne. Committee – Patsy McGuinness, Mary Maher, Jenny Champ, Joan Kenna, Ken Dunne & Rory Whelan. Trustees – Dorothy Odlum, Dr Adrian Honan, Ken Dunne & Geraldine O’Reilly.
LATE DAVID MALONE
Sympathy is extended to the family of David Malone, Assumpta Terrace Portarlington who passed away at the Regional Hospital Tullamore on Wednesday January 25. David was predeceased by his wife Tess and daughter Mary a number of years ago. He will be sadly missed by his daughters Tess, Noreen, Gemma, Anne, Rose & Ita. His sons David, Neddy, Martin & James. His extended family & friends. Requiem mass took place on Saturday January 28 at St. Michael’s Church, with burial after in St Michael’s Cemetery.
David was a former employee of Portarlington Power Station.
Sympathy is extended to Moira Shortall Station Rd on the death of her Mam, Vera Breen from Dr Murphys Place, Portlaoise, who died on Friday January 27. Requiem Mass took place In St Peter & Pauls Church, with burial after to St Peter & Pauls Cemetery Portlaoise.
The Dirty old Town’s committee are busy organising Fundraisers for Projects that will take place in the town in the next 2 months. On Friday, February 3 Sinead Ryan from Sinead’s gifts Main Street has organised a Little Black dress night in O’Dea’s Bistro. Tickets have been sold out for this event. Anyone who attends will be entered into a raffle on the night. The committee would like to thank Sinead for organising this event.
