Portarlington Tidy Towns

Judging is ongoing in the National Tidy Towns Competition and the Inter Community Litter Challenge begins this week.

We don’t know when the adjudicators will be in town so we are asking you to take the time to make sure Portarlington looks its best for them and indeed for everyone who lives, works or visits here.

Remember every little bit done will make the difference. C’mon be a sport and clean up Port.

Just to let you all know that the DOT committee are still here, and we will be organising more Projects in the coming weeks.  

Folk Choir

Portarlington Folk Choir will be taking a short break for the Summer and will be back singing at 12.15 Mass on Sunday, August 19.

Credit Union Draw

Creative Crafts Summer Camp

Running from July 23 to 27 in the Scouts Den Main St Portarlington. 4-6 year olds 10.00-11.30 - €40. 7-10 year olds 12.00-200 - €50.

Fun Day

Portarlington Pharmacy are having a massive customer appreciation sales day on Thursday June 28. All welcome. Bouncing castles, goodie bags and magician for the kids. Refreshments, goodie bags, free draws and cash prizes for the big kids! All welcome so come on and enjoy the fun.

Junior Tennis

Portarlington tennis Club have organised tennis activities start on Monday July 2.

Club members only. Mondays to Fridays during July and August 2.30pm to 5.00pm.

Teenage tournament every Wednesday 5pm to 7.30pm.

Condolences

Deepest Sympathy to the family of Hayden Brereton, Castle Gate who passed away suddenly age 4 years old. Condolences to his parents Wesley Brereton & Nikita Broughan, his Grandparents, extended family & friends. Mass of the Angels took place in St Broughan’s Church Bracknagh on Saturday June 23, with burial after in St Broughan’s Cemetery.

Sympathy

Sincere Sympathy to the family of Jim Byrne of Cloneygowan, Offaly who passed away at his home on Friday June 22. He is survived by his wife Christina, his sons Mark & Stephen and his daughter Grainne. His brothers Steve, Pat & Noel, sisters Mary & Carmel. His 5 Grandchildren, extended family & friends

Jim was a former employee of the ESB. Requiem Mass took place on Sunday June 24 at St Mary’s Church, Raheen, Offaly. Interment took place in the adjoining cemetery. 

Sympathy is extended to Patsy Butler, Church View on the Death of her sister Aine Teresa Nolan from Carlow.

Sympathy is also extended to the family of Una Maloney, Crann Nua who was interred in St. Michael’s Cemetery on Sunday June 24.

Gracefield FC AGM will be held on Monday, July 2 at 8pm in the after dark. All are welcome.

Kieran McEvoy Golf Classic

Gracefield GAA are holding a Golf Classic on June 28 & 29 in aid of the Kieran McEvoy Fund, also an Auction and BBQ will be held in the After Dark on Friday June 29. Arlington Soccer club Lotto which took place on June 19. Letters were L-Y-X-H. No winner of the Jackpot. Next Jackpot will be €6,000. Draw will take place on July 3 in the Barrow Lodge.

Athletics

TV to 10K - Meet and Train programme: In preparation for this year’s King and Queens County 10k, everyone is welcome to a registration evening on June 28 at 8pm in the GAA Centre, McCann Park Portarlington. The registration evening is organised to provide a 10 week meet and train programme that will help people to increase their level of fitness over the ten weeks and prepare them to complete this year’s King and Queens County 10k on September 16. Cost of the 10 week programme is €50.  For further information go to Facebook Michaels AC. All levels of fitness welcome to join the Meet and Train Programme. More information on Facebook.

Pat Fitzgerald Night of Running

In Memory of the late Pat Fitzgerald Laois Athletics and Gracefield GAA club teamed up to host an evening of running in the Offaly club on Wednesday June 20.  A series of 1 mile runs for the juvenile runners and a 5k run for the Adult and junior athletes. The night was a great success with home club St Michaels AC winning many medals in front of a home crowd.  Jim Brady on behalf of Gracefield GAA unveiled a Plaque in memory of the Clubs late President on the night, accompanied by members of Pat Fitzgerald’s family.

Care to Drive

Care to Drive is a volunteer driving programme where the Irish Cancer Society recruits volunteers to drive patients to and from their Chemotherapy treatments. They have recently partnered with Tullamore Hospital to start this Service, and are now looking for Volunteers to participate in the Programme. The service is free to the patient, with the Irish Cancer Society paying for the Volunteer driver’s fuel & offering €8 towards food on the day.
