OFFALY student Justin Daly from Delvin Park, Ferbane is set to raise over €3,000 with the help of friends, family and locals for the Irish Charity Suas Educational Development.

Justin will hold a fundraising night in Hiney’s Ferbane on March 25. There will be a table quiz followed by an auction. He is hoping to have high attendance at the night and hopes as many businesses as possible will be able to contribute to the auction.

Justin is a 20-year-old Pharmacy student at UCC and a former student of Gallen Community School. He is one of over 80 volunteers from around Ireland selected to participate in the Suas Volunteer Programme this summer.

Together he and his team will provide over 30,000 hours of service through a ten week programme in India and Kenya. They will provide teaching assistance to over 100 teachers improving the education of over 2,000 children in the developing world. Justin will be a member of the team travelling to the DAS (Development Action Society) training centre in South East Kolkata (Calcutta).

DAS serves almost 600 children through progressive interventions that include pre-primary schools and coaching centres. These centres aim to get children in slum areas into mainstream education and keep them there. DAS also works extensively in the area of health promotion and women empowerment running a number of vocational training centres for women.

Before Justin travels to India, he must fundraise €3,000 to enable him to participate on the programme and provide training and resources to the school. Donations above this amount will go directly towards the school he will be working with.

Justin began working with Suas in 2008 through his college society and looks forward to taking part in the volunteer programme this summer. He sees this opportunity ‘as an exciting and rewarding one, but also challenging and a real eye-opener on the developing world’.

If you cannot make the quiz / auction night, you can still contribute by donating to his MyCharity webpage at http://tinyurl.com/JustinDaly or http://www.mycharity.ie/event/justin_dalys_suas_volunteer_programme/
