THE Coláiste Íosagáin, Portarlington Irish Debaters reached the last five of the All-Ireland Gael Linn Irish language debating competition.

The Heritage Hotel in Portlaoise was the venue and a large number of supporters were able to travel with the team. The contest has been organised since 1960 and over 150 teams took part.

This was the first year they have reached the last five in the prestigious event having won their own regional competition. Their region covered the majority of the east of the country, except Dublin, including counties from Louth to Waterford.

The team comprised Sharon Boland, Ciara Madden, Megan O’Donoghue and Eadaoin Slattery. Their mentor was Ms Christine Fox. Gael Linn CEO Antoine O’Coileain thanked the teachers involved for their dedication.

The guest chairperson Senator Brian O’Domhnaill was sure to have a keen interest in the night’s motion, that the Senate was an irrelevant political institution.

Coláiste Íosagáin had to defeat the motion. Winners on the night were Sandford Park from Ranelagh, Dublin while the other teams were from Thurles, Cork and Longford Town.

This tremendous accomplishment is undoubtedly one of the greatest of any team representing Coláiste Íosagáin for many years.
