Vomiting bug hits Tullamore hospital

THE HSE is asking people not to visit the Midland Regional Hospital at Tullamore as there are a number of suspected cases of Winter Vomiting Bug (Norovirus) on a medical ward.

The Winter Vomiting Bug (Norovirus) is currently widespread in the community and people may unknowingly bring the bug into hospitals when visiting sick relatives or friends. Therefore, it is imperative that only essential visiting takes place. If you are visiting a critical care patient, please contact the ward manager in advance of your arrival.

Visitors are asked to please respect these restrictions and the security staff at the hospitals are ensuring the restrictions are adhered to. While the out patients department and the emergency department are not affected, patients are asked to refrain from attending the hospital if they have been affected by vomiting and/or diarrhoea in the last 72 hours.

Visitors are also advised that they must use the alcohol gel supplied as they enter and leave the hospital. Infection controls procedures are in place and will remain so until further notice.

If you or a member of your household has experienced nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhoea within the last 48 hours please do not visit the hospital as you risk spreading the virus to sick vulnerable patients.

The HSE is recommending members of the public, who are experiencing these symptoms, to first phone your local GP before presenting at the local practice.

If you are due for admission and have any of the symptoms or any of your family has same, please inform the hospital prior to your admission date.

The HSE thanks the public for their co-operation.
