Gutsy Gallen’s title defence ends against Holy Trinity

Gallen Community School ran into the perfect storm last Saturday in Croke Park when a combination of bad luck, poor form from key players and by far the best opposition they had met all year combined to bring about in a comprehensive defeat in the All Ireland Vocational Schools final.

Gallen Community School ran into the perfect storm last Saturday in Croke Park when a combination of bad luck, poor form from key players and by far the best opposition they had met all year combined to bring about in a comprehensive defeat in the All Ireland Vocational Schools final.

Gallen CS 0-7

Holy Trinity 2-18

For the first twenty minutes of this game these two sides went toe to toe in a very engaging battle that was reminiscent of their All Ireland semi final clash last year, but when Kieran McGeary’s shot for a point dropped agonisingly inside the far post and under the crossbar in the 24th minute, the Gallen students were facing the biggest battle of their lives and at no stage did they look like winning it.

They never stopped trying but it soon turned into one of those days when the harder the players tried, the more the ball seemed to bounce or break the wrong way. A couple of crucial intercepted passes, two missed goal chances and above all some top quality opposition ensured that the final winning margin made for stark reading from a Gallen perspective, though in time the players will reflect on the game and know that while they were second best, they weren’t as far away as the scoreline suggested.
