Tullamore tri-athletes enjoying busy summer

A number of Tullamore tri-athletes competed in the “Fighting Cancer” triathlon held in the Belvedere grounds in Mullingar on June 15.

This race consisted of a 750m swim, 20Km cycle and 5Km run. The results were as follows (places in brackets)

Diarmuid Herlihy (8) 1:08:19 with splits of 14:52, 32:32 and 19:05, David Lynam (32) 1:20:46 with splits of 19:34, 36:59 and 22:14, Noel Quinn (93) 1:37:42 with splits of 30:57, 37:01 and 26:20.

On 29 June, Adrian Martin competed in the legendary “Hell of the West” triathlon in Kilkee, Co. Clare. This tough race consists of a 1500m sea swim, a 43Km undulating bike and a 10Km run up and down the Cliffs of Moher. On a windy day making tough conditions even harder Adrian completed in a time of 3:06:30 with splits of 45:31, 1:29:59 and 47:44.

Triathlone was held on June 6 and this year played host to the National Sprint Distance Championships which drew the best of Irish tri-athletes to Athlone. This race consisted of a 750m swim, a 20Km cycle and a 5km run.

The course was changed slightly this year with transition moving from the army barracks to the road, which made for a long transition. Representing Tullamore Triathlon Club were as follows (race position in brackets): Ger Lynam 1:12:35 (126) with splits of 14:07, 35:52 and 18:07. Maurice Fitzgerald 1:16:06 (183) with splits of 15:23, 36:20 and 19:21. Tony McCormack 1:21:33 (297) with splits 16:02, 38:20 and 21:42. David Lynam 1:27:37 (437) with splits of 18:20, 42:05 and 21:21. Lisa Convey 1:29:45 (493) with splits 18:22, 44:52 and 20:29. Fiona Claffey (who was competing in her first triathlon) 1:30:49 (513) with splits of 20:51, 41:01 and 21:53.

Also competing in her first triathlon was Paula Spain who completed in the SuperSprint triathlon (200m swim, 7Km cycle and 2.5Km run). Paula finished in a time of 48:50 with splits of 8:06, 19:24 and 13:57.
