All roads lead to Brians Park in Edenderry this Friday evening when Derry Rovers host the Irish Legends exhibition game against a Derry Rovers Select XI at 7pm.
Months of meticulous planning and preparation have now been finalised and the realisation of a idea mooted in early January is now upon us this coming week.
The club has had the pleasure of twice having the Liverpool Legends over to play in Brians Park with the first game marking the official opening of the newly installed floodlights which now beam brightly each time our senior teams play their home games.
Through the clubs well established links with Liverpool, the committee proposed the idea with Liverpool Legend John Aldridge of creating this event to be played in May of this year.
This year the European Championship Finals year in Poland and the Ukraine and it is Ireland’s first European Championship Final appearance since Euro 88. Some of the Irish heros of that time and Italia 90 will be in Edenderry on Friday as part of a fantastic squad on what will be a brilliant occasion for all football fans of the Irish team.
John Aldridge will captain the team and he is no stranger to Brians Park now having played twice in the Liverpool Legends games. He has attended our club awards night and is a patron of the club’s newly formed Soccer Camp held in the summer last year.
John has assembled a stunning line up of ex-Irish internationals for the game and what a coup for the club with Paul McGrath taking his place in the starting line up.
Niall Quinn will also play on the night as will Tony Cascarino, Jason McAteer, Kevin Sheedy, Mark Kinsella and Alan McLoughlin.
Tickets are selling really well and are great value at just €5 each. The club have opened up a club shop on JKL Street across from Brady’s for this week to enable people to purchase tickets for the game which is sure to attract a huge crowd.
The shop is open daily from 10am up to and including matchday on Friday. You can buy tickets at the gate on Friday night also with the ticket office open from 6pm at Brians Park.
There will be something for everyone on the night with entertainment at half timeby a local hip hop group and music by a DJ before the game. There will be face painting for kids and the club’s U-9s will play an exhibiton game against Straffan FC before the big game enabling our stars of the future to showcase their skills to the public.
Full food stall and shop will be available on the night for the public. Once again get up early to Brians Park to get the best viewing position of watching the game and tell people you were there when Paul McGrath et all came to Brians Park on a famous night in May.
