LAST Saturday 12 footballers from St Vincent’s Ladies Junior Team from Daingean traveled to Carlow to take part in the Leinster Club 7’s Competition in Carlow.
This was as a big challenge for the girls after a great display in the League and Championship this year where the Saints challenged both the League final and County Final and were narrowly beaten by Doon/Shannonbridge in the League and Clara in the County Final.
They faced tough Teams from Carlow, Dublin, Wexford and Wicklow, and after losing the first game well to Ballinteer St John’s of Dublin on a score line of 3-2 to 8-3 the Saints took on Crossbeg/Ballymurn of Wexford beating them by the bare minimum.
Next up for the Saints were Ballon of Carlow once again the Saints coming out on top winning 4-7 to 3-6.
Things were looking good for the Offaly Girls and with just two matches remaining before the Final the Girls took on Coolkenno of Wicklow and Baile of Ceatharlach of Carlow, winning both games comfortably on score lines of 7-6 to 3-2 and 4-6 to 4-2 respectively.
That meant they once again they faced the challenge of their first match opponents Ballinteer St. John’s of Dublin.
Unfortunately for the St, Vincent’s Team they went into this Leinster Final without Roisin Keenaghan who was injured in their previous game and was taken to Portlaoise A & E.
But the loss of Roisin only made the girls more determined going into the final and with only minutes to go and three points between the sides a massive save by goalkeeper on the day Linda Evans gave the Saints their very first Leinster Title , hopefully the first of many titles to come. We wish Roisin a speedy recovery from her injury.
2011 was a great year for the young St Vincent’s Team under new manager Tommy (Tucker) Kelly. He gave the team strength and belief in themselves. Congratulations and well done to all at the Club.
The Leinster Junior Club 7’s winning Team from St Vincent’s were: Shauna McGarrigle, Niamh Harte, Chrissie Cocoman, Linda Evans, Emma Harte, Paula Harte, Orla Brennan, Aoife Norris, Roisin Keenahan, Brenda Betson, Sarah O’ Rourke, Sorcha Comer.
