Old failings come back to haunt Offaly

AN inability to turn chances into scores and the concession of three goals were Offaly’s undoing as they slumped out of the All Ireland Qualifiers.

After 18 minutes Offaly were deservedly eight points behind after a very poor start where they were overrun by a far sharper and more organised Limerick outfit. In truth they could have been further behind such was the dominance the home side enjoyed particularly from the tenth to the twentieth minute.

Limerick 3-13

Offaly 0-15

Eventually Offaly did get into the game, thanks largely to the influence of Niall Smith and Richie Dalton in midfield, and they created 14 scoring chances to just two for Limerick in the final minutes of the half.

Unfortunately for the large number of Offaly fans who made the trip to the Gaelic Grounds, their side only added six points to their total.

That set the tone for the second-half as Offaly reduced the gap to two points on no fewer than four occasions in the second-half but they could get no closer and when Limerick fired home a third goal seven minutes from time, the Faithful County’s interest in the 2011 Championship was at an end.
