FIVE Offaly lifters will be hoping to emerge with gold from the upcoming GPC World Powerlifting Championship in Limerick.
The week long event is being held in the Kilmurray Lodge Hotel and will welcome lifters from as far afield as India, Japan, Slovakia, America and Argentina.
The events get underway on Saturday with the World Bench Press Championship and Offaly will be represented by Rory Clarke.
Following Rory into action on Sunday is Ferbane’s Benny Dermody while Nathan Meehan will be competing on Monday.
On November 15 Max Selikis will be going all out to claim glory while Offaly’s most experienced campaigner, Clara’s Billy Meehan, will be in action on Friday, November 17.
Speaking to the Offaly Express this week ahead of the start of the event, Billy explained that training for the five lifters has been going well and they have been going through the ‘deloading process’ to make sure they are at their best for the World Championships.
He added that all the hard work had been done throughout the year to give the Offaly contingent the best chance to compete at this, the highest level of competition.
Al lifters will have to be in Limerick the day before their respective events for the all important weigh in.
A total of 347 lifters from across the world are traveling to Limerick for the event with some teams, including the Canadians, having been in the country for a considerable time already.
