The Kildare Horseshoe Pitchers held their Annual Singles and Doubles Competition recently.

In the Singles Competition the semi finals were fought out between Paddy Laffan (Ballycoolan) who was in great pitching form throughout this event and Gouleyduff’s Gerry Hyland. This one could have gone either way with ace for ace all the way Gerry Hyland got a couple of breaks during the game and won out in the end 21-18 to reach the final.

The other semi final between two Gouleyduff pitchers Paddy Byrne and Jimmy Mackey was won rather easily by Mackey on a 21-14 result . The final between Mackey and Hyland never lived up to the earlier rounds with Jimmy Mackey getting the better of Gerry Hyland on the scoreline 21-13 to take the Michael English Perpetual Memorial Cup which was presented by Maisie English widow of the late Michael English.

The Kildare Doubles Competition was won by Paddy Byrne and Jimmy Mackey. They beat Pat Ward and Sean O’Connor (all Gouleyduff) in a very closely contested final to take the Joe Bermingham Perpetual Cup. This Presentation was made by Frank Bermingham cousin of the late Joe Bermingham.

In the Leinster Horseshoe Pitching League played over four weeks the Woodsmen Team from Bunclody Co Wexford came out on top after the four weeks with the Gouleyduff Team taking second place. The Chairman of the HPAI Denis Ryan presented the Pat Furlong Memorial Cup and winners prizes to the Woodsmen Team and runners up prizes to the Gouleyduff Team at a function in Wexford.
