THE annual Shannonside Sub Aqua Club Fin Swim is set to take place over the June Bank Holiday weekend. Now in its fifth year, the sponsored Fin Swim has become the main fundraising event for the Banagher based club.

The event has grown from strength to strength each year and yet again all involved are hopeful that this year’s swim can generate much needed revenue for the club.

Over twenty five swimmers will take the plunge on Sunday, June 5. After a safety briefing carried out at twelve noon by the club’s Diving Officer, participants will be ferried up river on board the new club rib to the starting point at the mouth of the Shannon Harbour Canal. They will be then put under starters orders and will proceed three mile down the river Shannon to Banagher where the swim will conclude.

Later in the afternoon, members of the public are invited to attend a BBQ in conjunction with the Heritage Boat Association where a roasted pig on a spit and light refreshments will be served at the clubhouse. Bouncing castle and face painting will also take place throughout the day followed by a kiddies disco in the evening.

Club fundraising officer, Jerry O’Meara appealed to members of the local community to support this worthy fundraiser. “The people of Banagher and the surrounding towns have always been very generous in their support for the club down through the years. This year in particular is a milestone occasion for Shannonside SAC, because we celebrate our 35th Anniversary. The club also recently purchased a new Excalibur 6.1 metre rib and part of the monies raised from the sponsored swim will go directly to repaying the loan.

“I would like to take the opportunity to invite members of the public and in particular past members of the club to attend the BBQ that will proceed after the swim. The BBQ is organised in conjunction with the Heritage Boat Association who celebrate their 10th Anniversary, so we also extend our best wishes to Damien Buckley and his team who promote and celebrate the floating heritage on the inland waterways of Ireland.”

Concluding Jerry wished to remind all club members who have yet to collect their sponsorship cards, to pick them up from any members of the committee as soon as possible.

Shannonside SAC Fin Swim takes places on Sunday, June 5 at 1pm. BBQ in conjunction with Heritage Boat Association starts at 3pm followed by kiddies disco at 5pm. All welcome.
