Saville Report a watershed moment

THE truth about a landmark chapter in the history of the Northern conflict was laid bare last week with the publication of the Saville inquiry's report into the events of Bloody Sunday.

Its conclusions were stark and a long time coming. On that fateful day in 1972 British soldiers opened fire on civilians who were not posing a direct threat to them.

It amounted to indiscriminate slaughter which was the responsbility of the soldiers on the ground.

The British Government was quick to respond to Saville's findings, with the formal and unequivocal apology in parliament for the unjustified killing of 14 civilians in Derry.

The carnage of Bloody Sunday, 38 years ago, has resonated deeply throughout the psyche of the Northern troubles and beyond. Its legacy is still being felt today, by all the victims of the violence which was at times endemic during the time of the troubles.

The Saville report marks another watershed in the North's march towards reconciliation. Like everything else, it has been a long and difficult path, but eventually the truth triumphed.
