SHANE Lowry made a strong start to his 2013 season finishing tied for ninth at the prestigious Volvo Golf Champions event in South Africa.
The Offaly golfer was consistent over the four days shooting rounds of 70, 69, 70 and 70 to finish on nine under par.
He was spectacular on the 18th hole over the four days finishing six under on the par four over the four days. His tee shot on Saturday was the shot of the tournament as he came up three feet short of a spectacular hole in one which would have won him a Volvo truck.
The result earned Lowry a cheque for €45,357 and at this early stage of the season he is in a tie for 17th on the Race to Dubai.
More importantly he has jumped up to 52 on the Official World Golf Rankings. If he moves up two more places in the coming weeks he will seal his place in the US Masters.
The tournament was won by home favourite Louis Oosthuizen who finished on 18 under par, one shot clear of Scotland’s Scott Jamieson. Padraig Harrington finished in fourth place on 12 under after a closing round of four under par 68.
