Tullamore Golf Club
Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd March 2013
Two competitions were held last weekend, primarily to mark the Captains Drive-In which took place on Sunday evening. The first was a Men’s singles played over 14 holes on Saturday and with a shotgun start on Sunday morning. Unfortunately the cold weather prevailed so it was played on temporary greens. First prize went to Nigel Kearney (14) who finished with 35 points and he was closely followed by Tony Cleary (18) who had 37 -2 = 35 points. Third place went to Stephen Ahern (21) who finished with 34 points and he just pipped Gerry McCarthy (18) who also had 36 – 2 = 34 points for 4th place.
The second competition of the weekend was a mixed 3 person team event played over 18 holes and 24 teams took to the course. The weather had improved by the time it got under-way so the competition was played on full greens. The eventual winners were Ann Moore, Jimmy Minnock and Mossy Clavin who finished with 82 points who were closely followed in second place by John Daly, Paul Daly and Jacinta Cox with 81 points. Third prize went to Shane Cahir, Eileen Cahir and Adrian Cahir who finished with 80 points. Congratulations to all the prize winners and sincere thanks to our sponsors on the day for the lovely prizes.
The Meat Voucher Winner for the combined weeks 20, 21 and 22 was Joe Feely with a score of 34 points.
Next Week’s Competition
Members are asked to note that next week’s fixture is to be played on Saturday and Sunday, 8th and 9th Mar and is a 18 hole Fourball Betterball Stableford competition sponsored by David Cogley.
A huge crown turned out for this year’s Drive–In for Captain Dermot Scanlon and Lady Captain Frances Silke. Despite the huge crowd in attendance, nerves didn’t seem to be an issue for Frances as she stood up to the tee and smashed a great ball down the middle to a distance of 142 yards. No pressure on Dermot then!! He certainly didn’t appear to be under any pressure and with the perfect golf swing he cracked a huge drive to a distance of 277 yards. Both drives were said to be the longest in nearly 20 years of drive-ins!!. The Drive-In was followed by drinks and refreshments in the Clubhouse and a special word of thanks to Vinny and his catering staff for laying on super food. The prizes for guessing the drive distances were kept in the Scanlon family as Dermot’s son John was nearest to Dermot’s drive and his other son Mark guessed nearest to the Lady Captain’s drive. Congratulations to both Captains and best wishes for their respective Captaincies during 2013.
A table quiz in aid of the Offaly Hospice took place in the Clubhouse on Friday night 1st March and there was a great turnout of 23 tables for a very enjoyable night. €960 was raised for the Hospice on the night. Last year’s winners of Benny Molloy, Joanne McBride and Colm Burke were joined this year by Michael Bryant and there was no stopping them as they came home in first place again with a great score of 89 points out of 102. Many thanks to all involved in particular Tom Corroon and Ollie Bryant who organised the quiz and to Martin Darcy who set and asked the questions on the night. A special word of thanks also to all the sponsors of prizes on the night.
