THE Wolftrap Cycling Club in Birr held their annual John J Kinahan Criterium in the town centre on Wednesday, August 8. The race was a 40-minute plus 5 lap event held over closed streets and was well supported.

This criterium was a very colourful spectacle, watched by hundreds of people in very summer-like weather conditions. Race Presenter on the night was ‘Gaybo’ Howard who provided a well balanced race commentary and entertained the spectators in his own familiar style.

The race was won by Mehall Fitzgerald (Fitzy) from the World Wide Cycles club in Clonmel, who in the past won no less than five Ras stages.

Mehall has just returned after a long absence from the sport but clearly has lost none of his sprinting ability.

Veteran Craig Sweetman from Stamullen M Donnelly Road Club finished second with Enda Connolly from Richie’s Garda CC, third.

Result: 1 Mehall Fitzgerald, worldwidecycles.com, 2 Craig Sweetman, Stamullen M Donnelly RC, 3 Enda Connolly, Richie’s Garda CC, 4 Stuart Cox, Blackrose CC, 5 David Duke, South Dublin CC, 6 Neil O’Leary, Richie’s Garda CC, 7 Brian Martin, 7 Springs CC.
