The Annual Leinster Athletic Awards took place last Friday night in the Seven Oaks Hotel in Carlow and Tullamore Harriers stalwart Mick Hayden was a worthy recipient of an Outstanding Service Award for his long service to athletics in Leinster.
In his association with athletics that spans six decades, Mick had an outstanding running career along with playing no small part in building up Tullamore Harriers to the successful and thriving club it is today. Mick has always been there to help with coaching and is to this day a constant encouraging voice to all athletes.
As a recipient of this award, Mick follows in the footsteps of previous Offaly winners, Ann Coughlan, Paddy Larkin and Monty Franks
The Offaly Senior award went to Joseph Mulligan for the third year in a row and was well deserved as he had another great year in the throwing events, winning numerous championship medals in the process.
Eileen Rafter and Dean Power won the awards for the best Offaly Juvenile female and male athlete respectively. Eileen and Dean won their awards based on their performances in Leinster competitions throughout 2011. This is a great honour to receive and should spur these talented athletes to even greater things in 2012.
